20 Hour Famine 2016

My Group (Blue)
Left to Right:
Noah, Stevenson (me) , Jordan, Kyron, Michael, Simon, Ajani, Mitchell
This year, I'm taking part in the 20 hour famine. The PES famine team (Extension Members and extras) got the opportunity to sleep over at our school, Pt England. We are sleeping in the school library to raise funds for the many Syrian families who have fled their country because of war and had to leave everything behind. This money will go towards stationery packs, nutritious food (that can last them a term), art, sports, counselling, education, desks, tables, chairs and outdoor play equipment for children.

GEGNZ Summit

My friends and I at a garage band workshop.
Earlier last week the Year 7&8 extension group travelled to Hobsonville Point Primary School (HPPS) to present at the GEGNZ (Google education groups New Zealand) Summit. We were split into 2 groups one presenting about P.E.N.N (My group) , our school news network and the other about how we use google apps.

When we arrived we all received a swag bag which included a google pen, book, name tag and other things too. Unfortunately I lost mine so that was unlucky. Soon after that Collin spotted a van with lots of technological stuff such as remote controlled robots, 3D printers and more. Other schools started to arrive which included Orewa College, Rowandale Primary and Henderson Valley… ! When most schools were there we were welcomed by a mihi and waiata then Toby Carr talked to us.

If you don’t know who Toby is already well you are about to now. Toby Carr is a 16yr Old entrepreneur and CEO/Founder of his million dollar company DeXTech. He studies in Stanford University and has been in business for 2 years. Some things he said was take every opportunity that comes by and don’t put down people because then other people will do it back. Tom Edison and Sir James Dyson were the two people who inspired him. They inspired him as they failed more than a thousand times but never gave up and came up with a finished product. One thing that interested me was that he was a 15 Year Old paper runner now he has a million dollar company but still juggling the demands of being a teenager in school.

After this inspiring talk we split up into different workshops these included How to Use Garageband on an Ipad and how to make 360 photo spheres on an android device. My favourite workshop was creating a game on Scratch (Street fighter) with Orewa College. I enjoyed this session as I learnt how to code/create a game. Also the presenters were helpful and humerous.

GEGNZ was an awesome experience for me as I got to see other workshops about how to do things that I didn’t know how to do before. I hope the GEGNZ create another summit next year or while I’m in college so I can attend again and maybe be a young entrepreneur!

Extension Project: D.O.C Design

In extension we are learning about biodiversity. Mrs Lagitupu (Extension Teacher) has set us a task to come up with a project to protect endangered species. Here is a post that includes my Ideas & Planning, SketchUp Designs and Reflection.

Ideas & Planning:
Here is a list with some of my ideas:
  • Bird Feeder - durable, waterproof, how birds would know to go there?
  • Safe place away from their predators
  • Trap? …. pressure plates
  • Shelter
  • food - nutritious
  • Shape & Size of design
  • Innovativeness
  • Cost efficient

SketchUp Designs:
Bird Feeder Design One & Two:
I created this bird feeder to help protect endangered birds by providing a safe place for them to eat nutritious seeds. The type of wood I would use is Cedar as it lasts for years and can handle harsh weather conditions. However the downside to using this wood is the expensive cost.

From the first design I extended the roof to provide more shelter. I also shortened the platform and lowered the sides so that only small birds could enter the bird feeder.

These designs are durable, safe and waterproof.

Rat Trap Design One & Two:
This pest trap is helpful for the endangered species. It’s designed to lure pests and drown them. Negatives about this sketch is you have to check the trap daily so you can get rid of the pest you find. One interesting thing is it camouflages into the environment.

From the first design I have added a transparent lid to prevent birds eating the food and rain entering. It is also easy to check if there are pests as the lid is see-through and also lightweight. Replacing the rolling pin with a plastic strip was better as this would be more harder for the pest to reach the food and survive. I also added a ladder and a small hole so that only a rat could climb and enter the trap.

These designs are durable, safe and cost effective.

Reflection For Bird Feeder Designs:
Evaluate the effectiveness of your design:
I would rate my design 7/10 for effectiveness because I think it would work but I’m not sure as I haven’t actually made the model and used it.

Predict how your product will help to protect an endangered species:
I predict that my bird feeder will help to protect Stitchbirds by feeding them easily, daily and nutritionally.

Reflection For Rat Trap Designs:
Evaluate the effectiveness of your design:
I would rate my design 8/10 for effectiveness as it is durable, safe and cost efficient.

Predict how your product will help to protect an endangered species:
I predict that my rat trap will lure pests and drown them making the environment safer for endangered species.

Tiritiri Matangi Island: Reflection

Earlier this morning the Y7&8 extension students got the opportunity to travel to the beautiful island of Tiritiri Matangi managed by the D.O.C (Department of Conservation)! So at 9:00a.m on the dot we boarded the ferry which would take us to our destination. The reason why we were visiting Tiritiri was we were learning about biodiversity and how it’s important to our Earth.

Do you know what biodiversity means? Well if you don’t you’re about to know now. Biodiversity is short for 'biological diversity'. It is the variety of animals and plants found on this planet including the geographic locations they are found in.

Back to the story, when we finally arrived at Tiri we sat down facing towards a man who told us instructions and most importantly the rules on the island. After that we started our guided walk. During the walk I saw many different birds I hadn’t seen before. For example two Takahes which only have a few hundred left on this earth! Also a stitchbird and a piwakawaka (fantail) which is our logo for Pt. England School.

Five New Things I have learnt on this trip are:
  • The brown patch on the Saddleback indicates the anger of the Maori legend, Maui. He burnt the Saddlebacks back with his hot hands for not listening to his order.
  • Takahes green poop dries up into straw.
  • Bellbirds and Stitchbirds like sugar.
  • Bellbirds make sweet singing sounds.
  • In the beginning Tiritiri was 6% forested and 94% land. Now it is 90% forested and 10% land.

My experience at Tiritiri Matangi Island was amazing as I could see and learn about different birds I hadn’t seen before. I also got to ask questions to a Tiritiri Matangi volunteer/expert named John. One day… I want to be a member of D.O.C and help save endangered species!

Video Conference With Hawaii

This morning the Year 7&8 extension class had a video conference with two schools named Keau and Nanakuli Elementary School in Hawaii. Our extension class showed them our presentation about our native animals and showing them how we roll here at Pt. England. Brynn (a teacher in Hawaii) showed us her classes (Keau) presentation. Kai another Hawaiian teacher said that the teachers at his school (Nanakuli) teach their students all ciriculum subjects in Hawaiian Language.

In Hawaii there native animals are Nenes, Monks, Seals, Apapanes, Honus, I’iwis, Amakihis, Happy Face Spiders and many more. You see that photo on the right? Well that is the fire goddess which they name Pele. According to what Brynn was saying... Pele (Lava) has claimed lots of homes which has forced families to relocate in different houses.

Malama Honua will be sailing a shore at our Pt. England grounds. The Manaiakalani schools (2,500 students) will meet this crew and sing a waiata (He Honore and Nga Waka) and a chant (E Oho).

Polynesian Voyage Society

KFC...? You know those people who nibble on those chicken bones? Well those chicken bones were radiocarbon dated to see when the polynesians travelled to South America. The result was that the polynesians travelled to South America in the pre columbian year. Pre columbian means, "Relating to the history and cultures of the Americas before the arrival of Columbus in 1492." So they travelled before the year 1492.

Extension - Election Slogan

In extension we watched a video that explained what MMP is. It stands for mixed members proportional. Also Mrs Tele'a gave us a task to create a slogan/billboard, party name and an electorate area that you are going for. It should tell people to vote for them because they might have a catchy heading like building a brighter future, making low pay taxes and more. My heading was 5 STAR FUTURE!!!

NZ Host The Games!

Did you know that the Commonwealth games have been hosted by Aotearoa (NZ) 3 times? The years we have hosted are 1950 - in the city of Auckland, 1974 - in the city of Christchurch and in 1990 - in the city of Auckland.

I have found out about 1974 and the details relating to hosting the Commonwealth games. The movie here will show and tell you what the logo/mascot was then, the uniform they used to wear, sports they played and how many medals they won.

Malawi DLO

This term the Year 5&6 extension group have been learning about Malawi. Malawi is one of the poorest countries in the world. They don't have much food and any clean water. So everyone that has a variety of food and complains, you should be grateful for what you have because there are people who are less fortunate than you. There are more facts in my movie. Hope you enjoy ≧◉◡◉≦!

NZ AND MALAWI MENU

In Malawi the people there are unlucky because they eat the same thing everyday for breakfast, lunch and dinner but here in New Zealand we have a variety of food to choose from. Like in New Zealand we can eat pancakes, scrambled eggs, bacon, toast and many other things. But in Malawi they eat maise/maize which is a type of corn everyday for breakfast, they have boiled mice for lunch (Ewww!) and for dinner they have Nsima. Nsima is cassava root, corn plants and sorghum combined together. In NZ we have steak and mushroom sauce for lunch and for dinner we have butter chicken.

In New Zealand the cost of food is way more expensive than the food in Malawi. Why you might ask? Well its because in Malawi the type of food they eat is for free. The people there grow most of their food. Maize is the most popular because it can be grown anywhere and it can be easily harvested. Even children there plant and eat maize. I feel so sad for the Malawians because they have to wake up early around 6:00a.m and walk for 3 hours just to get to school.

I have come to know that children in Malawi don't have lots of nutritious food and clean water then us. That's why I want to raise money to help them to get those things. They have to walk to school which takes them 3 hours but here in NZ we have cars so we can drive to school.

Halloween

HALLOWEEN
List Of Things That Are In Halloween
Lollies Scary Costumes Candles Candy Candy corn Cemetery Ceremonies Cobwebs Coffin Creepy
Zombie Dress Ups Witch Dark Scar Scare
Scared Scream Screech Scythe Shriek Skeleton Skull Soul Spider Spirit Spook Stuff Supplies Suspicious Swarm Vampire Basket Bats Black magic
Blood curdling Bloody Bones Boogie-man Broom

Halloween is celebrated on October 31st and people go out to trick or treat. It was first celebrated in the UK (United Kingdom). Most people like to go out at night and some people don’t even celebrate Halloween.

Like church people they don’t celebrate Halloween they just have lights and a disco. Do you know why? Well people who go to church don’t celebrate Halloween because they think its to praise the devil. But you never know it might be true or not!

There’s a,“Light Side and a Dark Side.” Lemuria is the day to celebrate for Christians. On that day the pagan Romans pour milk on the peoples graves or give them little cakes to call the dead.

Lemuria day was celebrated on the 13th of May. The Christians changed Lemuria day into All Saint’s Day. The Christianised Lemuria was such a success that church leaders made a decision to move All Saint’s day or All Hallows Day to November 1st to drain the life out of pagan Samhain (Selwyn). Because Samhain fell on the night of October 31st before All Hallows Day people used to call it All Hallows Evening. The evening before All Hallows Day. It shortened into All Hallows Even, then finally into Halloween.

Making Pizza

Making Pizza By Stevenson And Louis from Team 4 Pes on Vimeo.

On the first week of school the year 5 and 6 extension students made pizzas. We all answered the same questions on our extension site. After that you had to find a partner and my partner was Louis.

The whole point of making pizzas was to celebrate Labour Day. Labour day is celebrated for a 8 hour working day so they have a day off work. We put ten pineapples on our pizza to signal the month october. Also lots and lots of cheese because heaps of people worked.

We planned what we were going to put on our pizza. Louis and I created a google drawing for what we were going to put on our pizza. We both had grated  cheese, green capsicum, pineapple, ham and tomato paste. When we finished we put our pizza in the oven and waited for it to cook.

While waiting we wrote a blog and after we finished we went to our pizza because it was ready. I cut it into eight pieces then Louis went and gave some slices to teachers like Mrs Bark, Mrs Sorenson and Mr Burt. The rest we ate ourselves. Louis and I agreed that this pizza was scrumptious, yummy yum yum.
