Winter Learning Journey D7:A2

If I was to raise funds for the Para-Olympic New Zealand team I would:

- Organize a social worth $20 per person at Vector Arena, drinks and food will be free. Have special VIP guests such Lorde, Richie McCaw, Shaun Johnson etc... attend. I will be the DJ and the government will sponsor the spot prizes.

- Mini Olympic Carnival at Dunkirk Memorial grounds.  Entry will be $10.  Events would include pie eating competitions, photo booths, carnival rides, inflatable bouncy castles, mini obstacle courses, a waterslide and more.  Above is a sample of the ticket that would be handed out.

Both events would be run by volunteers, family and friends so that all the money raised will go to the para-olympic teams.

Famous New Zealand Sport: Tag Football
TAG.jpg
In this image is myself trying to run away from the defender on the opposing team. The sport I’m playing is tag football. I enjoy this sport as it is a non contact sport which keeps me fit and healthy. This photo was taken 2 years ago.
Sporting Heroes: Shaun Johnson (Left) and Roger Tuivasa-Sheck

My sporting heroes are Roger Tuivasa-Sheck and Shaun Johnson.  They are both international Rugby League players. Roger has been transferred from the Sydney Roosters to the NZ Warriors Club.  He has taken over homesick, fullback, Sam Tomkins. Shaun Johnson has been with the Warriors since his professional career signing. I love the two league stars as their very good at this sport and show great skills and athleticism.

Activity 1:
This is my family - the Ericks. We’re a pretty typical Niuean family. Most of my life I’ve been living in Glen Innes, New Zealand. For two years I lived in Perth, Australia.
My family is currently made up of four people. My grandfather, Steven, is on the upper left-hand corner of the picture. He is married to my grandmother, Maliaga (she’s the one in the black polka dot top) my mum(Red Top) and I . My grandparents have been married for 41 years! Together they have seven children and I’m the adopted eighth one HAHAHAHAHA. From oldest to youngest their names are Sandy, Stephanie, Christian, Wylma (My Mum) Anne-Marie, John, Hayden and me. This picture was taken on Christmas Day 2015 at North-Shore Valentines.
Interview With My Grandfather Steven

  1. What is your name?
    Steven Hoyt Erick
  2. Where were you born?
    Suva, Fiji
  3. How many siblings do you have?
2 Brothers and 6 sisters (two of the girls are twins).
  4. What is your favourite thing about living in New Zealand?
I like going to work to earn money and feed my family at home and buy a house.
  5. If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go? Why?
    Niue or Sydney,
Niue because have lots of land there to do some planting, go hunting as well, fishing and lots of swimming especially at Matapa Chasm, Tuhia or just outside of the house.

Sydney as it has fast public transport service. The markets are also good… they have lots of fresh fruit in stall. I like Sydney as they have great sights to see.

NZ AND MALAWI MENU

In Malawi the people there are unlucky because they eat the same thing everyday for breakfast, lunch and dinner but here in New Zealand we have a variety of food to choose from. Like in New Zealand we can eat pancakes, scrambled eggs, bacon, toast and many other things. But in Malawi they eat maise/maize which is a type of corn everyday for breakfast, they have boiled mice for lunch (Ewww!) and for dinner they have Nsima. Nsima is cassava root, corn plants and sorghum combined together. In NZ we have steak and mushroom sauce for lunch and for dinner we have butter chicken.

In New Zealand the cost of food is way more expensive than the food in Malawi. Why you might ask? Well its because in Malawi the type of food they eat is for free. The people there grow most of their food. Maize is the most popular because it can be grown anywhere and it can be easily harvested. Even children there plant and eat maize. I feel so sad for the Malawians because they have to wake up early around 6:00a.m and walk for 3 hours just to get to school.

I have come to know that children in Malawi don't have lots of nutritious food and clean water then us. That's why I want to raise money to help them to get those things. They have to walk to school which takes them 3 hours but here in NZ we have cars so we can drive to school.
